Rose Stasal, 1857-1941

Rose Stasal

To Lizzie
All I can wish for you in life is prosperity, love, and health,
Rose Stasal.
Jackson, [California] April 23, 1884

In researching this family, FamilySearch.org did a much better job than Ancestry.com did identifying the family group.

Rose Stasal, age 22, appears to have been the daughter of George Stasal and Elizabeth his wife. She was living with her parents in Amador County, California for the 1880 census.[1] Also living in the household were her siblings, Maggie Stasal, age 22 [perhaps a twin?] and George Stasal, age 18. All of the children were born in California. George [Sr.] died before the 1900 census was taken. The cemetery (see information below) has no birth or death dates for George. We only know that he is buried in Jackson City Cemetery, Jackson, Amador County, California.

Rose and her mother, Elizabeth were living together in the 1900 census.[2] [Ancestry had indexed the surname as Stusal.] Elizabeth states she was born Feb 1826, in Germany. She was widowed; gave birth to five children, three were living. Rose states she was born Dec 1857 in California; single. Elizabeth died 13 July 1909 (see the cemetery listing below).

It appears that Rose moved to Oakland Township, Alameda County, California for a time. She was living there in the 1910 census with a Maud Goulet.[3] Maude was a widow and Rose was single.

By 1920 Rose was back in Jackson, Amador County, California. She and her sister, Margaret, are living together.[4] Both are single.

Margaret and Rose are still living together in 1930.[5] Margaret owns the home.

Margaret Stasal died 20 June 1938 in Amador County at age 80.[6]

The 1940 census is the last census that Rose Stasal appears on.[7]

Rose Stasal died in Amador County 24 December 1941.[8] The California death index indicates her mother’s maiden name was Grenwald; and it also indicates that her date of birth was 22 December 1857. This information fits perfectly with the age given in the 1880 census above.

George, Elizabeth, Margaret and Rose Stasal are all buried in the Jackson City Cemetery, Jackson, Amador County, California.

When I find families such as the Stasal's where the lines didn't continue on I am left feeling I am their last voice here on this earth. They lived, they contributed something, and they died. May they be remembered in some small way.
