Mary W. Brown, Martha Y. Brown

Mary W. Brown
Sutter Creek, Amador County, California
April 20, 1884

Dear Lizzie,
“May ever on your gentle brow
The wreath of friendship bud and bloom
And on that wreath, oh may there be
One blossom cherished long for me.”
Ever your friend
Mary W. Brown
Sutter Creek, April 20, 1884
[Handwritten note by Lizzie] Sister to Martha Brown form whom I took music lessons & daughter of Dr. Brown, Sutter Creek.

We find Mary W. Brown with a sister Martha in the 1880 census living with their widowed mother, Margaret Brown.[1] Martha is age 28, and listed as a Music Teacher; Mary W. is age 22 and listed as “at home”; Emma is age 17, and listed as “At school”.

The 1900 census finds the family still living in Amador County.[2] Margaret Brown, widow, born March 1819 in Kentucky has had 5 children, 3 who are living. Daughter Martha Y. Brown, age 48, born December 1851, California, is a Music Teacher. Daughter Mary W., age 41, born June 1858, in California is a Seamstress.

Mary W. Brown died 20 Apr 1921 in Amador County, California.[3]

Martha Y. Brown died 27 Jan 1925 in Amador County, California.[4]

There appear to be no newspapers available in the 1920s for Amador County. I did not locate burial information for Margaret, Mary or Martha. I expect they are all buried in Sutter Creek but they all might be buried without headstones. If anyone knows more about these women, please let me know so that I might update their story.
