Week 25: Genealogy Database Software:
My favorite genealogy software is RootsMagic. It was a very straight forward piece of software to learn the basics about, and is also a great piece of software for the advanced genealogist. The folks at RootsMagic make it easy to learn many of the features of the program by creating many webinars for users to access free (and the webinars remain free and available on the site).
Locally we also have a RootsMagic User's Group that meets the third Saturday of odd numbered months. The folks at the Family History Center, 2220 NE Jackson School Rd., Hillsboro, Oregon were kind enough to give us space to meet. We welcome anyone within driving distance to join us for our bi-monthly meetings.
Perks of using the software include the ease of creating citations with the citation wizard; the time-line feature (and who doesn't love time lines?); kinship determination list (my clients really like that report!); and the wall chart is really loved as I print mine with each line that comes down a different color. And if you use it for a family reunion, make the name tags the same color as their family line on the descendancy chart so they can find themselves easier. All charts are easier to read in color!
I'm a big fan of RootsMagic. You can even get a free download at their website and take the program for a spin!
52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging
prompts (one for each week of 2012) that invite genealogists and others to
discuss resources in the genealogy community including websites, applications,
libraries, archives, genealogical societies and more.
