Are We Related? My DNA Journey

I wanted to find others I was related to through DNA. I’ve tested with 23andMe, Ancestry.com and Family Tree DNA. I have located cousins. Some are willing to explore our connections further, others never respond to an email. I thought it might be easier to see my connections with others if I created for myself a DNA chart. Not just surnames but DNA lines that I know I match. Below is my DNA/Ancestry chart. Where you don’t see any color is an opportunity for us to learn more about our common ancestry. I have a lot of pictures passed down to me in my family that I have posted on this blog me (maternal line). My goal is to find people in my direct ancestral lines noted below that might be willing to have their DNA tested. I am willing to put up the money for these tests. I have some pet projects that I want to see results on! I want to find that Ireland connection as another DNA connection and I believe this line is our common one. We just need to find that link!

First Generation

1.  Thomas W. DUNLAP was born on 30 Mar 1832 in West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio. (Date from headstone.) He appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1840 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio.¹ He appeared in the census on 13 Sep 1850 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio.² Thomas appeared in the census on 23 Jul 1860 in Township 4, Amador Co., California.³ He died on 15 Sep 1885 at the age of 53 in Dunlap Ranch, near Bieber, Lassen Co., California. He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, McArthur, Shasta Co., California.

Second Generation

2.  William DUNLAP was born in 1798 in Ireland. 1850 census states he is 51 (b. ca 1799), Ireland.

He signed a will on 23 Feb 1852 in Wayne Co., Ohio. Will book 4:5: Wayne County Wills, Wooster, Ohio.
Dunlap, Wm. filed, 1852 March 2 (written 1852 Feb 23), Executor Wm. Finley [brother in law], bondsmen Jn. Hewitt, Arch Finley $14,000.  #1 sons, Thos., Adam, Alex, Jas., Wm., Arch, Andr. Jackson; dau. Marg., Mary Elize, Nancy Jane; son-in-law Jackson Burns to be guardian for 7 minor ch. William died on 23 Feb 1852 at the age of 54 in New Salem, Ohio. He was buried in Feb 1852 in Parks-Honey-Burns Cemetery, West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio. Burial info given for Parks-Honey-Burns Cemetery. Family story states that William and wife Nancy died together in New Salem, OH. There are 2 New Salem, OH's.  One in Ross County and one in Fairfield Co.  However, because I found them through the years in Congress, West Salem, Wayne Co., OH, I believe they died here.  Family story says they came to America in 1826. Nancy FINLEY and William DUNLAP were married on 11 Jan 1830 in Wayne Co., Ohio. Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN; book call no. 977.101 W36r; Marriages Wayne County, Ohio 1812-1864, Volume I, A-J; page 191. They appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1840 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio.¹ They appeared in the census on 13 Sep 1850 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio.²

3.  Nancy FINLEY was born in 1809 in Ireland. 1850 census state she is 41 (b. ca 1809), Ireland.
Headstone says 1809. She died on 14 Feb 1852 at the age of 43 and is buried in Parks-Honey-Burns Cemetery, West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio. Possibly married as Agnes Finley to William Dunlap, Wayne Co., OH; 11 Jan 1830, by T. McCoy, J.P.

6.  Adam FINLAY was born about 1764 and was from County Down, Ireland. 1850 census states he is 86 (b. ca 1764), Ireland. He immigrated in 1824 to Ireland to Congress, Wayne County, Ohio. Arch Finley's obit states he immigrated with his family in 1824 from Ireland. He bought land in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio. Down Ireland.  Possibly, Man and wife of Co. Down Ireland.  Stone very worn. He signed a will on 20 Mar 1861 in Wayne Co., Ohio. 7.  Flora Stanley was born about 1768 but we don’t believe she’s from County Down, Ireland. 1850 census states she is 82 (b. ca 1768), Ireland. She died on 4 Oct 1852 at the age of 84 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio. Not on census with husband and son in 1860 census. She was buried in Oct 1852 in Parks-Honey-Burns Cemetery, West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio. Burial info given for Parks-Honey-Burns Cemetery.  Maiden name not proven.  From reference on internet.
